New York Public Library Lions
These monumental marble lions by Edward Clark Potter (American, 1857-1923) which flank the New York City Main Library's steps in mid-Manhattan were put in place in 1911 and have since acquired the nicknames of "Patience" and "Fortitude." They were carved of pink Tennessee marble, resting on bases of Milford granite. Their size is appropriate to the proportions of the neo-Renaissance building designed by Carrere and Hastings. Tea House Rabbits Miss Wemore's
Two fanciful Tea House Rabbits as a decorative bookend set, cast from a pair of stone originals by American sculptor Charles Rudy. They adorn the gateposts to Miss Wetmore's newly restored teahouse, on the grounds of Chateau sur Mer (Castle on the Sea) in Newport, Rhode Island. Charles Rudy was born in 1904 in Pennsylvania and studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. A member of the National Sculpture Society and the American Federation of the Arts, Rudy has exhibited at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. In 1939, Rudy participated in the New York World's Fair and in 1944, he won an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Rudy taught for many years at the Cooper Union Art School, New York. Licensed reproduction from the Preservation Society of Newport County Rhode Island, made from resin.
